While “This Is Us” star Chrissy Metz is contractually obligated to lose weight for the show, just how much she loses, and how, totally depends on her.

Metz plays Kate, an aspiring singer, on the NBC drama, which returns for its second season on Sept. 26. Metz’s character starts on a weight loss journey in season two, meaning Metz will be taking the journey right along with her. Metz already lost weight since the show began to keep up with her character. However, the actress has no target weight for the show’s character. So, Kate’s weight loss all depends on how Metz handles her own.

“Thus far, the plan we had for the character and what Chrissy’s been doing have been working in tandem, with a talk once a year of, like, ‘Hey, here’s what we’re thinking,'” show’s creator Dan Fogelman told “The Hollywood Reporter”. “So we have a general long-term plan that we’ve all talked about, and we will adjust the plan as needed. I mean, that’s life, right?”

Metz has struggled with weight her entire life and even started Weight Watchers when she was 11 years old. Her family struggled to get by when she was growing up and she turned to food for comfort, leading to her weight gain. She said knowing her character would have to lose weight was a “win-win” when she signed the contract.

“Because it’s one thing to try to do it on your own. But as human beings, it’s an ego thing: We’re more likely to do something for someone else,” she told TV Line. “I just have to be very clear. Whether or not I lose weight or stay the same, it’s purely a choice of mine for health. Not because I think that plus size, curvy, voluptuous, big bodies aren’t attractive—because I think they’re awesome and sexy.”

Today, the actress embraces being an inspiration for body positivity and doesn’t let “fat shaming” get her down. She posted a photo to Instagram of a dress she wore that she said made people “get rowdy”.

“The outpouring of love and support from all of you lovely people has not gone unnoticed. I hope that in some small way an unconventional body wearing an unconventional material opened up discussion, hearts and minds,” she wrote. “I truly had no idea it would make anyone feel uncomfortable, I just wanted to try something different.  All I’m saying, is do YOU, Boo! Wear what you want, love you love and treat people the way you want to be treated❤️”

You can watch Metz/Kate’s weight loss journey unfold on “This Is Us,” Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on NBC.
