‘A Christmas Story Live!’ Is Coming To TV in December
Just in case watching it literally all day on Christmas isn’t enough (spoiler alert: it’s not), get ready for some more “A Christmas Story” headed your way this December, courtesy of Fox.
The network that already gave us “Grease: Live” and “The Sound of Music: Live” has announced a live production of “A Christmas Story: The Musical” will be singing its way into our homes this holiday season. Christmas wish officially granted!
The beloved tale of a boy named Ralphie attempting to convince everyone around him he should get a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas is pretty much a must-see for most people during the holidays since it was released in 1983. It’s so popular that the home where the movie was filmed still operates as a museum. You can even spend Christmas Eve night there to really get into the holiday spirit!
The film has already been turned into a Broadway musical. But Fox’s version will feature a different cast and several new songs, along with the music featured in the Broadway version. Just check out the teaser trailer below and try not to get excited—we triple-dog dare ya!
The network is partnering with Marc Platt, who was behind “Grease: Live” and the film “La La Land” for the production. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who scored the Broadway version of “A Christmas Story: The Musical,” will be composing the new songs.
“‘A Christmas Story’ is one of the most beloved holiday films of all time—audiences have made a yearly ritual of re-watching it—and we are so thrilled to have Marc leading the charge in bringing the musical version of that film to television,” David Madden, president of entertainment at Fox Broadcasting Company said in a press release. “The extraordinarily gifted Pasek and Paul were instrumental in transposing the movie to the stage, and we believe the transition to LIVE television event will be just as entertaining for viewers.”
And let’s not forget the new cast! It’s full of some pretty big names you’re sure to know and love, like Jane Krakowski, Chris Diamantopoulos, Matthew Broderick, Maya Rudolph and Anna Gasteyer! Broderick will be narrating and Diamantopoulos and Rudolph will play Ralphie’s parents, while Krakowski will play his teacher. Ralphie himself will be played by 11-year-old Andy Walken, following a nationwide casting call earlier this year. You can watch Walken’s reaction to receiving the news that he was cast as Ralphie below (it’s adorable)!
So put on your pink bunny pajamas, dim your leg lamp and make plans to cozy up around your TV (it’s three hours long, so get comfy!) on Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. EST for what is sure to be the start of a new Christmas memory!
