A ‘Clueless’ musical coming to Off-Broadway

Good news for all you total Bettys out there: A “Clueless” musical is officially happening, and you can catch it in an off-Broadway theater in just a matter of months.

The musical was written by Amy Heckerling, who also wrote and directed the 1995 cult classic, which starred Alicia Silverstone, Stacy Dash, Paul Rudd and the late Brittany Murphy.

The “Clueless” musical will be a “a jukebox musical,” meaning that instead of penning original songs, the production will re-purpose existing pop hits in a way that feels fresh but still nostalgic and suited to the story of Cher Horowitz and her friends.

According to the show’s description on the theater’s website, Heckerling’s score for the musical will reimagine ’90s hits “into ingenious parodies and yearning monologues for her lovesick characters.”

Heckerling, who also directed another cult classic “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” told Entertainment Weekly that preparing for the musical has been “really fun” and “a whole new world,” but she didn’t reveal who might be playing the iconic roles of Cher, Tai and Dionne.

However, the musical has been in talks for years now, and back in 2015, Katy Perry even expressed a wish to play Cher in the production. We bet Perry could definitely give some major “as if” attitude as the sweet but mischievous Cher!

As for a director, “Clueless” will be in the capable hands of Kristin Hanggi, who is best-known for directing the smash-hit jukebox musical, “Rock of Ages.” In 2009, the Broadway show garnered five Tony nominations, including one for Best Direction of a Musical.

Choreography will be by Kelly Devine, who also worked on “Rock of Ages,” as well as “Come from Away,” a Tony-award winning Broadway musical about the power of love triumphing over hate in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

With such highly acclaimed talent behind this production of “Clueless,” fans can rest assured that their beloved film is going to be an off-Broadway hit. The show begins in November of this year and will only run through December, so make sure to get your tickets when they become available!
