New appliance churns out homemade ice cream in 2 minutes

Imagine this: A Keurig-style machine, but instead of coffee, it dispenses soft-serve ice cream in just a couple of minutes. Doesn’t that sound dreamy? Well, wake up and smell the frozen goodness because this dream has come true.

Coldsnap is an innovative new product that was named a CES 2021 Innovation Award Product Home Appliance Honoree and with good reason. The countertop appliance can whip up a single serving goodie in about two minutes. You select a single-serve pod, pop it into the machine and wait. Sound familiar? Only instead of a cup of classic roast, you have a dish of ice cream.

Actually, it is capable of more than bowls of ice cream. The Coldsnap also boasts the ability to serve up:

• Frozen coffees,
• Frozen cocktails
• Frozen yogurt
• Shakes
• Slushies
• Smoothies

Matthew Fonte, who calls himself a “serial entrepreneur,” came up with the idea after starting invention journals with his young daughters and started Sigma Phase, Corp. to make the concept a reality. The rapid-freezing appliance uses pods, which are metal cylinders that are shelf-stable and do not require freezing. It uses “compressor/condenser technology” much like traditional refrigerators and freezers do.

“We’re taking all the cold that it’s generating, and we’re harnessing that cold and we’re isolating it right around the pod,” Fonte told USA Today, “and we’re effectively pulling heat out of the pod and putting it through this refrigeration system.”

The result is frozen concoctions in 90 seconds or less with no cleanup. Just toss the used aluminum pod into the recycling bin. No cooling period is required either, so you can make one treat after another.

You can’t rush out to buy one just yet, though. Coldsnap machines and pods probably won’t be available until the second quarter of 2021 during a beta test run. The full launch should happen in 2022. According to USA Today, the machine is expected to cost between $500 and $1,000. Pods will likely run about $3 each. For updates, follow the @coldsnap_delight Instagram page.
