Depending on your circumstances, you might be unable to work full-time. Perhaps you’re a student with a full class load. Maybe you’re a single mom/dad with a couple of kids. Or you’ve worked full-time for years and want to ease back on your commitments just a bit.
The problem can be that part-time often means little to no benefits. And we don’t mean benefits like bowls of trail mix in the break room, or free T-shirts with the company logo. (Although I do like trail mix, especially with chocolate chips.)
We mean the real stuff, like health care, life insurance and paid vacation!
Check out this list for some big-time employers that offer the real deal:
1. Barnes & Noble
B&N gives part-time staff a week of paid vacation after six months on the job, and two weeks after a full year. Medical, dental, 401(k) and flex-spending are also part of their package.
Health, dental and vision care plus a 401K plan are just a few of the perks waiting for you at the giant retailer once a part-time hourly employee’s worked 180 days or 600 hours.
You also get discounts on child-care assistance, prescription medications and life insurance.
Who knows, you might get a break on those great hot dogs they have in the food court, too. And don’t get me started on the soft-serve yogurt.
3. Lands’ End
The Wisconsin-based retailer offers benefits to part-timers at its corporate HQ as well as its stores nationwide.
Also included: discounts on home and car insurance, a backup childcare center for children and grandchildren, and more.
The athletic brand just does it in the benefits area for part-timers. If you’re above the 20 hours per week benchmark after a year of service, the home of the swoosh offers a health plan, a basic dental and vision plan, PTO and even stock purchasing options. There might be a deal on sneakers, too.
Let’s get this first point out of the way up front: You’re not an employee or an associate, you’re a partner. That means you’ve got a stake in this thing from the word go, which is nice.
According to an article on Nextavenue, a corporate rep said the company “recruit[s] and hire[s] partners without regard to age.” After putting in 240 hours over three consecutive months at the coffee powerhouse, you’re eligible for full benefits including health, dental, vision, life, disability and a 401(k).
There’s also an emergency assistance fund that helps cover costs after a natural disaster, and mental health assistance.
The shipping behemoth puts their money where their mouth, er, website is—stating right up front that “UPS is one of the only companies in business today that offers hourly employees full benefits, from medical/dental coverage to tuition reimbursement.”
Flex-spending accounts and insurance packages are just a few of the perks UPS offers. And those nice khaki uniforms, of course.
7. Whole Foods
The grocery giant offers PTO, health and life insurance and stock-option plans. And did we mention that employees and spouses get 20 percent off in the store? (Of course, it should be noted, we’re not sure how this will change now that Amazon owns the grocer.)
