Country Crock is now making plant butter

If you’re vegan, dairy-free or just trying to eat more healthfully, one of the first foods you might replace is butter. It can be a tough one to stay away from, though, because it is in so many delicious foods: pancakes, macaroni and cheese, cookies and the list goes on.

Finding a substitute is a must if you want to keep enjoying chocolate chip cookies! Luckily, there are vegan butters on the market from brands like Earth Balance and I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter. And now, Country Crock is getting in on the trend with plant butter.

Country Crock’s Plant Butter has been out for a little while already, so you may have seen it at a store near you. It will be launching nationwide on Sept. 4. The new plant butter is dairy-free, gluten-free, vegan and certified kosher. You can buy versions made with olive oil, avocado oil or almond oil in sticks, and the almond oil and olive oil versions are available in tubs as well, according to VegNews.

Despite being a vegetarian for a decade and what I refer to as a “sometimes vegan” (I am working on not liking ice cream so much…), I have never eaten plant butter before. So, when offered the chance to test Country Crock’s plant butter, I jumped at the opportunity.

Country Crock claimed its plant butter “has the same rich creamy consistency and taste as traditional dairy butter.” To really see what it tasted like, I toasted some bread and slathered on the plant butter flavored with olive oil. To my surprise, it tasted like, well, butter!

Country Crock’s plant butter was as creamy and spread as well as the brand’s regular dairy-based butter, which is what I usually use. I actually thought the plant butter had a bit more flavor than dairy-based butter, but not so different of a flavor that you’d notice it if you used it as a substitute in a recipe.

I have not yet tried plant butter as a substitute for dairy-based butter in a recipe, but given the consistency, it seems like it would work just as well.

Will you be giving Country Crock’s new plant butter a try?
