Country fried bacon makes the savory side dish the centerpiece of a meal

How did bacon become the reliable side dish add-on in the food universe?

Whether it’s the classic breakfast dish of pancakes and bacon or a bacon cheeseburger, few people can argue that the side of bacon is what makes the mouth water. It can also be prepared in a variety of ways: chewy, crispy, baked and even candied for a glorious combination of sweet and savory goodness.

Doesn’t it only seem fair that bacon should take center stage? Well, one food blogger is offering a recipe that will keep you from ever relegating bacon to a side dish again: country-fried bacon.

Milisa from Miss in the Kitchen actually calls this recipe Chicken Fried Bacon and it looks like down-home mouth-watering yumminess on a plate. She doesn’t just fry this bacon up in the pan in the usual way. In fact, the bacon doesn’t start out in the fryer. The thick-cut bacon strips get baked in the oven to really bring out the savory flavors of the meat.

But, we’re getting ahead of ourselves a little bit here. To make Chicken Fried Bacon, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • 12 slices Petit Jean Meats Peppered Bacon or other thick-cut pre-seasoned bacon
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon Lawry’s Seasoned Salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cups vegetable oil

There’s also an optional gravy you can make to dip this beautiful bacon in. It’s made with bacon grease, flour, salt, pepper, and milk.

Once the bacon comes out of the oven it’s time to dredge it in a flour and spice mixture. This is where the bacon takes on its “chicken-fried” personality and escapes from the realm of ordinary breakfast food. Milisa offers step-by-step instructions on how to cook the bacon, give it the perfect coating and then fry it to create the deliciously golden, crispy final product, so visit her website for the full method.

You can eat this on its own and dip it into the gravy. Or you can add it to your favorite sandwich. You may never want regular bacon again after trying this recipe!
