Crayola now sells a skin tone-inspired box of crayons

If you have fond memories of coloring as a child — or enjoy it still — you know that half the fun of making art can be in picking out the colors with which to complete your masterpiece. When coloring people, however, it hasn’t always been easy to find the perfect match, unless you happened to be the same exact color as Crayola’s “flesh”-colored crayon.

Decades later, and in honor of International Diversity Day, Crayola has finally announced a brand new set of crayons called Colors of the World. This new line of 24 crayons represents more than 40 global skin tones for children of all races, cultures and ethnicities, allowing them to finally represent themselves accurately through their artwork.

Former Chief Chemist of MAC cosmetics and current CEO of MOB Beauty Victor Casale worked with Crayola to develop these crayons by modeling his scientific process for inclusive foundation shades. After more than eight months, they developed colors from rose to almond to those with golden undertones.

“With the world growing more diverse than ever before, Crayola hopes our new Colors of the World crayons will increase representation and foster a greater sense of belonging and acceptance,” Crayola CEO Rich Wuerthele said in a press release. “We want the new Colors of the World crayons to advance inclusion within creativity and impact how kids express themselves.”

The crayon packs themselves feature side panels with color references, and each crayon is wrapped in a skin tone label with the color name in English, Spanish and French. Shades include down-to-earth names like Light Golden, Deep Almond and Medium Deep Rose.

While Crayola first introduced multicultural crayon packs in 1992, the colors included in these boxes were chosen from their standard shade selection, with the addition of black and white so people could blend those colors.

These new colors mark the first time in Crayola’s 100+ year history that the brand has ever launched this many colors at once.

The new Colors of the World crayons will hit shelves in July in packs of 24 or 32. The 32-count pack will be sold exclusively at Walmart.com, and will include four more colors for hair and four more colors for eyes.

Will you be ordering a pack for your kids?
