Exercise bike will turn off Netflix if you stop pedaling

It’s the kind of invention I can imagine users quickly developing a love/hate relationship with: An exercise bike that will only let you watch Netflix videos if you’re pedaling, so you can make sure you’re only watching TV if you’re exercising at the same time.

With enough use, you might even train yourself to love your hour of pedaling by positive association—because hey, it means an hour of “Shameless,” too, right?

Creator Ronan Byrne recently uploaded instructions for creating his invention—named Cycflix—to Instructables, a website where users can find how-to directions for DIY projects. In his instructions, Byrne wrote that he’d crafted the machine to “to help me learn some python [a type of programming language] and maybe (a big maybe) get me using the exercise bike.”

His instructions for the Cycflix detail how he hooked his bike up to his computer and programmed his invention to play his Netflix selection—but only if he kept pedaling above a certain speed for a certain amount of time. If he dipped below his goal, a warning flashed, and if he didn’t speed back up, the video would pause.

If you’re not into programming, this may not be the project for you. But if you don’t mind getting tangled in some wires and want to practice your Python coding, this could be a fun way to keep your exercise goals on track.

Check out Byrne’s video of his creation:

If you’re not much of a coder—and not very interested in starting now—there are other exercises you can do while watching TV. From simple exercises you can do in bed to straightforward yoga moves you can do while you binge watch, there are plenty of ways to get or sty healthy while getting your Netflix fill.

A creation like the Cycflix will just help you stay a little more accountable to that exercise. Who wants one?
