The sweet reason this dad and daughter are wearing helmets

Families that wear helmets together, stay together…that’s how that saying goes, right? Well, that’s how it goes for the Gutierrez family, at least. The youngest Gutierrez is currently sporting a helmet to reshape his skull and his dad and sister are donning helmets in solidarity.

Jonas Gutierrez, who is 4 months old, was diagnosed with a case of plagiocephaly (the medical term for a flat head). This is a relatively common occurrence in babies, since their skulls are extremely malleable and spending too much time laying on their backs, which is the safest sleep position for infants, can flatten the back of the head.

“He had an oversized head in the womb,” Jonas’ dad, Gary Gutierrez, told ABC News. “And he sleeps really well, but he sleeps on that one spot. He was constantly sleeping on it so it just kept getting worse.”

Hence, the helmet.

Jonas will have to wear his helmet for three to six months, until his skull reshapes itself. Until then, Gary and his 3-year-old daughter, Camila, have started wearing their own helmets (meant for riding bikes, but let’s not split hairs) to keep Jonas company.

“She’s like, ‘Hey! I have a helmet too and daddy has a helmet,'” Jonas’ mom, Shayna Gutierrez, told ABC News about her daughter. “So she just got exited and went and dug them all out.”

Gary says he’s extremely proud of Camila for her response.

“She’s all about inclusion,” Gary told BuzzFeed News. “She wants her brother to be happy. She doesn’t want him to feel different.”

And when Gary’s cousin, Shea Serrano, shared a picture of the family in their helmets on Twitter, it quickly went viral. Because, duh: How cute is this?!

The tweet quickly gained traction, touching people around the world (the responses containing the words “aww” and “adorable” are too many to count) and inspiring others to share pictures of their own extremely cute helmet babies.
