Check your cupboards. The Food and Drug Administration has announced a limited recall of Del Monte Foods Canned Fiesta Corn Seasoned with Red and Green Peppers. The canned corn is being recalled due to under-processing, which could result in spoilage leading to life-threatening illness. So far, there have been no reports of illness associated with these products.

The recalled products are 15.25-ounce cans with the UPC number of 24000 or 02770 printed on the label. They have “Best if Used by” dates of the following dates in 2021: Aug. 14, 2021; Aug. 15, 2021; Sept. 3, 2021; Sept. 4, 2021; Sept. 5, 2021; Sept. 6, 2021; Sept. 22, 2021; and Sept. 23, 2021.

According to the FDA, no other production codes or products are affected by this recall. In total, about 64,242 cans are affected by the recall.

The affected cans were sold at multiple retailers in 25 states, including Alaska, Alabama, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin, along with 12 international locations.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, homemade foods can be a more common source for foodborne botulism if the items have not been canned, preserved, or fermented. Though store-bought foods can also be contaminated with the botulism toxin, it’s usually less common.

Consumers who believe they bought one of the affected products are urged to dispose of them or return them to the retailer for a full refund or exchange. Consumers can also contact Del Monte with questions by calling the toll-free hotline at 1-800-779-7035 or by visiting the company’s website.

If you feel like there’s been an uptick in recalled foods this year, you’re not imagining it. The Centers for Disease Control has investigated 22 outbreaks this year, which is the highest number of investigations in 12 years.

However, the rise in recalls is not because our food supply is becoming less safe.

“I think that the issue isn’t that there’s more unsafe food,” FDA Commissioner Dr. Scott Gottlieb told CNN last month. “I think what’s happening is that we have better technology than ever before to link outbreaks of human illness to a common pathogen.”

“I think food is more safe now than it’s ever been,” he added. “We have much more resources and additional tools to do effective surveillance.”
