Advent calendars are a fun holiday tradition. They give us all a little something to look forward to in the days leading up to Christmas. And this season, Scandinavian Airlines and VisitDenmark took the concept to the next level.

Designed like an advent calendar, the #FindingHygge web page features 24 Danish doors and a special surprise behind each one. From Dec. 1 through Dec. 24, visitors can click to open the door of the day and be entered to win incredible Danish experiences. Hidden behind each door, one-of-a-kind trips and other prizes are up for grabs.

So far, the trips feature roundtrip flights, accommodations and authentic activities. For example, the Dec. 8 door held a three-night stay for a family of four at a cozy cottage at Danhostel Skanderborg. Also included was a canoe trip to a small island for a picnic. Another trip featured three nights in a historic castle. While staying in Gram Castle, two guests will get an exclusive tour and can enjoy the cake table.

Hygge How-To

The thing is, we’re already halfway to the 24th. However, there are still plenty of cozy trips and even tips available. Tips?

The Danish concept of hygge (pronounced “hooga”) was made for the holidays. It means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life, surrounded by good people. You can click on any previous date on the website’s calendar to learn ways to incorporate more hygge wherever you are. Here are just a few tips to fill your life with hygge and prepare for a trip to Denmark:

  • You can’t buy hygge. Simply slow down and don’t feel guilty about it.
  • Take a walk outside and appreciate the beauty of nature.
  • Eat at a restaurant with communal tables to meet new people.
  • Invite friends over year-round.
  • Value simplicity over excess.

If you’re one of the lucky winners, the cozy concept is sure to linger long after the holidays.
