Hummus is the perfect snack food. Whether you are dipping pita bread, veggies or chips, it’s a protein-packed way to satisfy your savory cravings. And now, hummus is doing the unthinkable: It’s coming to satisfy your sweet craving as well.

Yep, dessert hummus is now a thing. And it’s kinda amazing.

The creation comes to us from Delighted by Hummus, which has been featured on ABC’s “Shark Tank.” It’s the creation of Makenzie Mazluff, a nutritionist and entrepreneur.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: Hummus for dessert? That’s odd. But it actually makes total sense! Chickpeas (much like other legumes, such as black beans) can easily adapt a sweet profile. That’s why recipes like black bean brownies and chickpea blondies have been popular for a while now, especially among vegans and others eating a plant-based or gluten-free diet.

But what do you dip in dessert hummus? The possibilities are endless! Fresh fruit (such as strawberries or apples), pretzel sticks, graham crackers, or cookies.

Delighted By Hummus comes in four different flavors, each of which are vegan, gluten-free, soy-free and nut-free. There’s Brownie Batter, Snickerdoodle, Vanilla Bean, and Choc-O-Mint.

Even though it’s a dessert hummus, Delighted By Hummus is found in the hummus section of the supermarket, according to their web site. You can use their store locator to see where it’s sold near you.

In the meantime, you can try making your own dessert hummus at home. It’s not too different from making regular hummus, in fact.

This recipe from A Virtual Vegan shows how to make Brownie Batter Dessert Hummus. The ingredients are simple (a can of chickpeas, cocoa powder, maple syrup, non-dairy milk, vanilla, salt, and chocolate chips) and you can make it in just five minutes!

Or try this recipe for Snickerdoodle Dessert Hummus from Happy Food Healthy Life. All you need is chickpeas, cashew butter, maple syrup, brown sugar and cinnamon. They recommend dipping with apples, pretzel sticks, or cinnamon flavored pita chips.
