A ‘Dirty Dancing’ sequel is in the works and Jennifer Grey will star and produce

“Dirty Dancing” fans, get ready to have the time of your life all over again. A sequel to the 1987 classic movie is finally in the works, and original star Jennifer Grey is set to appear in as well as executive produce the new film.

The sequel from Lionsgate will be co-directed by Jonathan Levine and Gillian Bohrer (“Warm Bodies”). The screenplay will be written by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis (“Five Feet Apart,” “The Curse of La Llorona”).

“It will be exactly the type of romantic, nostalgic movie that the franchise’s fans have been waiting for and that have made it the biggest-selling library title in the company’s history,” Lionsgate CEO John Feltheimer said in an earnings call, according to Deadline.

Details about the rest of the film’s cast or a release date have not yet been announced.

“Dirty Dancing” grossed $218 million at the global box office after it premiered in 1987. The original song from the soundtrack, “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” by Frank Previte, John DeNicola and Donald Markowitz, won both an Oscar and a Golden Globe. Grey and late co-star Patrick Swayze were also nominated for Best Performance Golden Globes for their roles as Frances “Baby” Houseman and Johnny Castle.

Over the years, the film has spawned a number of spinoffs, including two TV series, a TV movie, a musical and the 2004 movie “Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights.”

The original movie has only grown in popularity in the 33 years since its release. The resort where much of the movie was filmed, Mountain Lake Lodge, even offers “Dirty Dancing”-themed weekends for guests to experience the movie magic for themselves.

In 2017, “Dirty Dancing” returned to theaters to mark the 30th anniversary of its premiere.

“Dirty Dancing is one of those really rare films that feels just as fresh and fun as it did the first time you saw it,” Tom Lucas, Fathom Events’ vice president of studio relations, said in a press release at the time. “As an ’80s classic set in the ’60s, it’s a double-dose of cinematic nostalgia and we couldn’t be more delighted to welcome Baby and Johnny back to the silver screen.”
