Disney’s ‘Enchanted’ is finally getting a sequel — and Amy Adams in on board

For all the sequels, remakes and reboots that Disney has churned out over the past decade, the studio had curiously left one of its best titles untouched — until now.

The modern fairytale classic, “Enchanted,” is finally getting a follow-up!

When that movie came out in 2007, it blew critics and audiences away with its savvy take on princess stories, memorable original songs, impressive visuals and undeniable charm. It raked in more than $340 million at the box office and was nominated for three Oscars, making it seem ripe for a sequel at the time but one never materialized.

Well, 13 years later, Disney is making it happen for subscribers to the company’s streaming service, Disney+. The studio announced the new movie, which will be called “Disenchanted,” in a December press release that included dozens of new titles that are in the works.

If you never saw “Enchanted” — first off, you should remedy that as soon as possible — it’s about a princess-to-be named Giselle who is banished from her kingdom by an evil queen and sent to New York City, where she falls in love with a lawyer. The movie is animated like a classic Disney fairy tale when the princess is in her kingdom but turns into live-action visuals when she goes to the real world.

It poked fun at the typical tropes used in Disney’s princess stories and rom-coms but also paid tribute to them, making it a refreshing movie for people who were tired of the same old storylines.

The cast was also fantastic and was led by Amy Adams, who became a major star thanks in part to her work in the movie. James Marsden played the narcissistic prince who chased after Giselle, Susan Sarandon was the evil queen and Patrick Dempsey was the world-weary lawyer she falls for. Oh, and the whole thing was narrated by Dame Julie Andrews, so how could it not be great?

In Disney’s announcement about “Disenchanted,” it confirmed that Adams would be reprising her role as Giselle but didn’t release any other details. The IMDb page for the new movie also lists Marsden and Dempsey as being rumored to return, while “Rock of Ages” and “Hairspray” director Adam Shankman will be helming the whole thing.

The movie will be released straight to Disney+, according to Deadline.
