Stephen King’s Sequel To ‘The Shining’ Is Being Adapted Into A Movie

After the huge success of the “It” remake this summer, it’s no surprise that yet another Stephen King novel adaptation is headed to a theater near you! According to Deadline, Warner Bros. is fast-tracking an adaptation of “The Shining” sequel, “Doctor Sleep,” with Mike Flanagan as the director.

The 2013 book “Doctor Sleep” picks up where “The Shining” left off and follows an all-grown-up Danny Torrance, who now goes by Dan. The character still has his “shining” power, which has driven him to become an alcoholic — although he’s working on remaining sober throughout the story. Dan begins a job at a hospice and uses his psychic powers — and a cat —to tell when someone is about to pass away. He is able to comfort them before they do and this is how he’s given the nickname “Doctor Sleep.”

Intrigued? That’s what Warner Bros. is counting on! Audiences love a good King film adaptation. The author himself famously didn’t like the movie version of “The Shining,” but audiences and critics seemed to love it:

“The Shining” first came to theaters in 1980. A lot has changed in the film industry since then, but King’s reason for not liking “The Shining” came down to story, not special effects or anything of the sort. He’s called the recreation “cold” on several occasions and objected to the treatment of one of the main characters, Danny’s mother Wendy. “I felt that the treatment of Shelley Duvall as Wendy—I mean, talk about insulting to women,” he told The Paris Review in 2006. “She’s basically a scream machine. ”

Iconic director Stanley Kubrick directed “The Shining” and King said the director put his own interpretation on the plot, according to The Paris Review.

King really took to the 2017 adaptation of “It,” however. “It’s something that audiences are going to relate to, and they’re going to like the characters. Because to me — it’s all about character,” King said when asked about the “It” remake in an interview with Bloody Disgusting.

So, will “Doctor Sleep” live up to King’s standards? We certainly can’t wait to see what director Flanagan comes up with!
