The holidays are around the corner, which means you’re probably prepping your kitchen for your next baking adventure. But before you break some eggs, check the packages in your pantry. Duncan Hines has pulled select cake mixes from the shelves due to possible salmonella risk.

Conagra Brands has voluntarily recalled four varieties of Duncan Hines cake mixes following a positive finding of salmonella in one of its retail products, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced recently. The four mixes being recalled are the Classic White, Classic Butter Golden, Signature Confetti and Classic Yellow. All four of the mixes have “Best If Used By” dates between March 7, 2019, and March 13, 2019.

Here’s more on the recall:

A retail sample of Duncan Hines Classic White cake mix tested positive for the bacteria recently and may be linked to a larger salmonella outbreak under investigation by the FDA and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to the agency. Several people reported using cake mix sometime before becoming sick and some may have also eaten raw batter, the FDA said. Five salmonella-related illnesses are being researched.

Although it has not been confirmed that the Duncan Hines cake mix is linked to the outbreak, Conagra has decided to recall the four varieties manufactured during the same time period “out of an abundance of caution,” the company said.

What Is A Salmonella Infection?

While most people usually recover without treatment, salmonella can be severe for some and possibly lead to hospitalization. The most common symptoms of a salmonella infection are diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated product. The infection typically lasts from four to seven days.

Consumers who bought these cake mix varieties are urged to return the products to the original store of purchase. If you bought one of the recalled mixes, you can request a replacement coupon through an online form. If you have questions about the recall, you can also call Duncan Hines’ customer service line at 888-299-7646 during regular business hours.
