Dunkaroos are officially coming back to stores
After years of pleading on social media from fans and even celebrities, ’90s kids are about to witness the return of one of the most sought-after snacks of their favorite decade.
This summer, get ready to find Dunkaroos back on store shelves! The iconic cookie and frosting duo will be available for dunking in its most classic flavor: vanilla cookies and vanilla frosting with rainbow sprinkles.
“For those who grew up in the ’90s, the original cookie-frosting combo represents the taste, color and fun of being a kid during that decade,” Jeff Caswell, president of snacks at General Mills said in a statement. “We’re excited to help ’90s kids relive all the best parts of childhood.”
Dunkaroos were first introduced to the market in 1992, featuring the mascot Sydney the Kangaroo. The new version is a round cookie with a “D” printed on it, but originally, the graham cookies came in five different shapes (including Sydney) and were accompanied by a small tub of chocolate or vanilla frosting for dunking.
By 1993, Dunkaroos had introduced four new flavors of frosting, including chocolate chip, cinnamon, peanut butter and the fan-favorite, rainbow sprinkles.
Since Dunkaroos’ introduction 28 years ago, some brands have tried to re-create the sweet ’90s snack.
Walmart sells what they call “Dunk ‘N Crunch,” which is essentially the same thing, but in more “grown-up” packaging. And GoGurt made something similar just last year called Dunkers, but that version has you dunking cookies in yogurt, not frosting.
Betty Crocker even offers a recipe that is simply its own Rainbow Chip frosting and a pack of graham crackers.
But nothing quite compares to the original treat!
