Boho-chic shawl pattern includes pockets—and is easy enough for crochet beginners

Have you tried your hand at crochet yet? It’s a fun and creative hobby that requires few supplies — and it might even improve your mental health. As the summer season winds down, now is the perfect time to start on a cozy project.

On the Etsy shop KnotYourselfOut, we found an easy crochet pattern that’s ideal for this time of year: A boho-style shawl that features pockets and fringe.

You read that correctly — its a shawl with pockets!

The stylish wrap looks like a complicated project, but it’s made with just two basic stitches: the half-double crochet and a version of the double crochet. These are two of the most common crochet stitches and they’re simple to learn.

The pattern gives step-by-step instructions on how to make the stitches. From there, crafting this shawl is only a matter of working back and forth in rows.

The pockets are crocheted separately and then added on to the finished shawl with a series of whip stitches.

For $6, you’ll receive a PDF of the pattern, which includes instructions and photos to give clear guidance on how to do the stitches and how to make the cool fringe that dangles from either end of the shawl.

The finished product measures 70 inches long (with the fringe) and 18.5 inches wide.

As far as yarn, the Etsy seller, Sonja Hood, recommends using a medium weight (level 4) yarn. To create the pictured shawl, she suggests the Lion Brand Heartland line in the Grand Canyon color.

You will need four skeins of yarn to complete this project. The pattern will give you recommendations on crochet hook size, but your choice of hook may depend on how tight you want to make your stitches.

One Etsy reviewer, kcp8705, loved the pattern but gave a recommendation to fellow crocheters.

“Just a note if your tension is more relaxed, I recommend going down a hook size. I went down to an 8mm (size L)  and seemed to be just right and also buy an extra skein of yarn.”

So, pick up some yarn and a hook and you’ll have this versatile shawl stitched up just in time for the cool fall weather!
