Family explains why their dog is always on the roof

Reddit

Some families have lap dogs. Some have…roof dogs.

Meet Huckleberry, the golden retriever from Austin, Texas, that has a penchant for hopping onto the roof from his family’s backyard and keeping watch over the neighborhood.

The family’s message to neighbors and passersby? He’s doing just fine, thanks for asking, and yes, go ahead and take his photo.

Huckleberry’s human parents were getting lots of knocks on the door, with concerned people alerting them that a dog was on their roof. They got so many knocks that they decided to post a sign in their window, which is now circulating in a Reddit forum. Here’s what it says:

Huckleberry is living up to his name and learned how to jump onto our roof from the backyard. We never leave him in the backyard without someone being at home. He will not jump off unless you entice him with food or a ball! We appreciate your concern but please do not knock on our door…we know he’s up there! But please feel free to take pictures of him and share with the world! #hucktheroofdog

Reddit users, of course, are having a field day with it.

Turns out, Huck just really likes hanging out on the roof, according to his owners.

“There’s a nice breeze up there, and he just wants to check everything out,” his guardian, Allie Lindenmuth, told Inside Edition.

He’s basically like a watchdog for the entire neighborhood!

Huckleberry doesn’t seem to mind the spotlight. In fact, he’s got his own Instagram, with almost 23,000 followers and counting. You can follow his adventures at @hucktheroofdog.

While Huckleberry is a super adorbs social media star, there are actually lots of other “roof dogs” around the world.

In fact, the New York Times has an entire slideshow of “roof dogs” in Mexico. We also spotted a subforum on Reddit aptly called “Dogs on Roofs.” Huh, who knew? So next time you’re walking around the neighborhood and see a dog hanging out on the roof, maybe you don’t need to be alarmed after all!
