So, I have news…
Fanny packs are back.
Yep, this is not a drill: Fanny. Packs. Are. Back.
Don’t believe me? Well, the proof is in the pudding. Vogue (the fashion bible) itself has given a nod to the trend, and designers from Karl Lagerfield to Kenzo to Chanel have recently featured the accessory in their shows.
Fanny packs are part of a new trend called “gorpcore,” which is kind of like normcore, but with a camping-chic twist. Okay, I know that last sentence kind of sounded like word salad, but hear me out. Normcore was a trend that started a couple of years ago when stars and models ditched glitz and glamour in favor of unpretentious, simple clothing that featured no obvious designer labels. (New York Magazine described it as “self-aware, stylized blandness.”)
Now, gorpcore takes that stylized blandness to a new level by adding in a touch of hiking couture. Think parkas, fleeces, vests, puffers and anoraks. The look has also been described as ugly-pretty. The idea is that obnoxious neon colors and baggy fabrics can actually somehow be stylish, as they exemplify your sartorial nonchalance and your “too cool to care” persona.
Of course, the problem with gorpcore is that it is not immediately transferable to a summer look. You can’t don a parka in the hot July sun. But… you can don a fanny pack, my friends. And, yes, people are.
For example, Kendall Jenner seems to have a whole closet full of fanny packs, as Cosmo India has observed:

And we also have photographic evidence of Fergie and Rihanna following this trend:

And these packs of fanny have been seen all over the runways:
And guys are even wearing them too. (Yes, “manny packs” are a thing, despite how terrible that term sounds.)
Even dreamboat Leonardo DiCaprio was seen wearing one recently. (Do people still use the term dreamboat? I feel like I’ve aged myself.)

What do you think? Would you rock a fanny pack? Do you think gorpcore is ugly/pretty or just ugly? Hey, at least it’s functional!
