The FDA Has Recalled Multiple Dog Foods For High Levels Of Vitamin D

Dog owners, take note: The Food and Drug Administration issued a nationwide recall on a variety of dry dog food brands after testing found dangerously elevated levels of vitamin D.

After receiving consumer complaints about dogs getting sick, the FDA tested samples of the food and found some of the brands contained up to 70 times more vitamin D than recommended according to pet health experts. Consuming too much of these foods can lead to vitamin D toxicity, a serious health hazard for animals. Vitamin D toxicity symptoms include “vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss. Vitamin D at toxic levels can cause kidney failure and death,” according to the FDA statement about the recall.

Anyone who has dogs who have eaten any of the recall foods listed below and show these symptoms should call their veterinarian immediately.

The FDA first issued the recall on Dec. 3, then updated their list of recalled foods on Dec. 6 and 20. Since the agency continues to investigate the problem, it may add foods to the recall list as it learns more.

The recall applies to a variety of foods sold across the country at Kroger, King Soopers and elsewhere, and the recall list includes multiple brands. To check your dog’s food, look for the following information on these products that are on the recall list as of Jan. 17:
