Fran Drescher says ‘The Nanny’ reboot is possible

With so many 1990s shows making comebacks recently, the door is open for even more iconic sitcoms to come back to our screens with brand-new episodes. There’s a whole slew of shows that fans would love to see on their regularly scheduled programming again, and “The Nanny” is definitely at the top of the list.

“Entertainment Tonight” recently caught up with the show’s star and co-creator, Fran Drescher, and she had a lot to say about the idea of rebooting “The Nanny.” This year marks the 25th anniversary of the show, which debuted on CBS in 1993, and Drescher opened up about how the time could be right for a revival.

“We’re talking about it. Peter and I are talking about it,” Drescher told “ET,” referencing her ex-husband, Peter Marc Jacobson, who co-created the series with her.

The 60-year-old actress also teased to having a surprise project in the works, but wouldn’t say what — just yet.

“We’re working on a very big project,” she told “ET.” “It’s going to be very exciting for the fans, but I’m not at liberty to announce it yet. But it’s gonna be big.”

However, she did tell NBC’s “Today” that that “big” project wasn’t a “Nanny” reboot, it was still something fans of the show should get excited about.

“I’m working on something with Peter that I think ‘The Nanny’ fans will be very excited about,” she said.

She did go on to tell “Today” that “there’s always a chance” that an all-new, modern “The Nanny” could make its way to TV screens.

“Never say ‘never,'” she said.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the classic series (shame on you!) — “The Nanny” centers around Fran Fine (played by Drescher), a young, fashionable woman who’s just been dumped and lost her job and finds employment as a nanny to three children of a wealthy widower.

The show ran from 1993 until 1999, but Drescher seems to think picking things up more than 20 years later would be doable.

When envisioning what the show might look like — if it were to happen — she said she pictures more of the same — but with a modern twist — at least as far as her character is concerned.

“She would’ve maybe gotten involved in more things [that] Fran Drescher is involved with,” the actress told “ET.” “All kinds of things from environmental issues, to health, to civil liberties, that’s what I think Fran [Fine] would be doing now — opening her big Queens mouth for the greater good.”

Clearly, Drescher has given this some thought. So here’s to hoping our dreams of Fran Fine’s return become a reality!

In the meantime — we’re excited to see what Drescher is working on next.
