‘Frasier’ reboot is in the works

The much-loved long-running US TV series “Frasier” is officially coming back, 16 years since it was last on our screens.

“Frasier” ran for 11 seasons, from 1993 to 2004, after getting spun off from “Cheers.” It starred Kelsey Grammer as psychiatrist Dr. Frasier Crane. The series won 37 Emmy Awards in categories like best actor, best editing, best supporting actor, best writing, and best comedy series. It will return on streaming service Paramount+, formerly CBS All Access.

On Twitter, Paramount+ said the revival will “have everything you love about the original: coziness, great writing, and of course, a cast led by @KelseyGrammer.”

Variety reported that the new series will be written by Chris Harris (“How I Met Your Mother”) and Joe Cristalli (“Life in Pieces”).

“Having spent over 20 years of my creative life on the Paramount lot, both producing shows and performing in several, I’d like to congratulate Paramount+ on its entry into the streaming world,” Grammer said. “I gleefully anticipate sharing the next chapter in the continuing journey of Dr. Frasier Crane.”

“Frasier is one of the most acclaimed comedies in modern television history and truly defines premium storytelling,” CBS Studios president David Stapf said in Variety. “There has long been a call from fans for its return, and that call is now answered thanks to the amazing Kelsey Grammer reprising his iconic role of Dr. Frasier Crane and a brilliant creative plan from Joe, Chris and Kelsey. We can’t wait to reveal its next chapter on Paramount+.”

It’s not been confirmed whether other original cast members David Hyde Pierce (Niles Crane), Jane Leeves (Daphne Moon) and Peri Gilpin (Roz Doyle) will return. Sadly, Frasier’s dad Martin won’t be back — John Mahoney, who played him, passed away in 2018.

In 2019, Grammer, now 66, teased a reboot on “In Depth with Graham Bensinger,” saying they had a plan “hatched.”

“We’ll see how people respond to it, because it’s not gonna be the same place, not gonna be Seattle, it’s not gonna be the same Frasier, it’s gonna be the man in his next iteration, and hopefully that’ll be something people like watching,” he said. “It’s still his search for love, for one thing, I think that will always go on with Frasier, but [also] a connection with his son.”

No specific release date has been set for the new series, but it’s expected to debut in 2022. Paramount+ launches Thursday, March 1.
