George W. Bush’s daughter Barbara tied the knot in secret wedding ceremony

When you’re the daughter and granddaughter of two former presidents, being in the spotlight is pretty much something you can’t avoid.

Still, Barbara Bush, daughter of former President George W. Bush and former First Lady Laura Bush, managed to pull off an intimate, secret wedding on Sunday, Oct. 7.

Only 20 family members were invited to the small ceremony, which was held at the Bush family compound in Kennebunkport, Maine. Escorted down the aisle by her father, Barbara married actor and screenwriter Craig Coyne in the backyard of the property, near the ocean.

“It was a very secret wedding, a little bit like my elusive sister,” Barbara’s twin sister, Jenna Bush Hager, said on the “Today” show, where she is a contributing correspondent. “But also, just family in a place that means family love, and it was just beautiful.”

Hager also shared a photo of her and her sister on the wedding day, writing “Happy tears, heart exploding as I watched this beautiful girl get married in the place that means love and family. I’m so proud to be this beauty’s sister.”

Hager served as matron of honor for the wedding, and her daughters, 5-year-old Margaret and 3-year-old Poppy, were flower girls, along with Coyne’s 5-year-old niece. Poppy also served as the ring bearer and Barbara’s aunt, Dorothy Bush Koch, officiated the ceremony.

The ceremony took place just five weeks after the couple became engaged. The newlyweds were able to keep their relationship pretty private after being set up by friends on a blind date last November. Although Coyne — who acted in 2005’s “Jarhead” — lived in Los Angeles and Barbara in New York, they will be now be living together in Manhattan.

Mother of the bride, Laura Bush, shared this sweet family photo on Instagram:

While the bride’s grandmother and namesake died in April, Barbara kept her memory alive at the wedding, wearing a bracelet with her Vera Wang gown that her grandfather gave her grandmother for their 70th anniversary.

“Barbara is named for a unique and strong woman — and rightly so, because she is unique and strong,” former president Bush wrote on Instagram. “@laurawbush and I are so proud of our compassionate, daring, fierce, kind, intelligent, loving daughter. And we’re thrilled to welcome Craig Coyne to our family.”
