GMC is making an electric Hummer super truck with 1,000 horsepower

General Motors is resurrecting the Hummer — as an electric truck.

The automaker made the announcement in a Super Bowl commercial featuring basketball star Lebron James.

The 30-second spot states the new truck will have 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of torque. It can accelerate from zero to 60 in three seconds.

All three stats are pretty impressive for any truck, let alone an electric truck with zero emissions.

The commercial ends with text across the screen reading, “A quiet revolution is coming,” alluding to the fact that electric vehicles are much quieter than their gasoline and diesel-powered counterparts.

The new GMC Hummer EV will be revealed on May 20, 2020, and it will be available for purchase in Fall 2021. Here’s the ad, from GMC’s official YouTube page.

General Motors stopped making Hummer vehicles over a decade ago when they were known for being gas-guzzling behemoths.

The brand’s revival likely hopes to reverse that thinking.

General Motors may need Hummer’s brand power, too, because it’s entering a crowded field of competitors.

A number of other automakers and startups have recently begun embracing electric vehicles and entering the electric truck market. Tesla’s Cybertruck, Rivian’s R1T, Lordstown Motors’ Endurance, and Bollinger’s B2 are all expected to begin production within the next year or two.

Trucks, the New York Times says, are a “glamour vehicle” in 2020. We’ll definitely be seeing more of these electric versions, since 72% of the light vehicle market right now consists of light truck sales.

If you’re interested in an electric car or truck, you’ll have plenty of options to choose from in the coming years. The New York Times reports that more than 40 electric vehicles are currently available for sale in the U.S., including Elon Musk’s Tesla and the Toyota Prius, and 100 more plug-in models are coming in the next five years.

However, electric cars have not yet gained much traction; less than 330,000 sold in 2019 (out of 17 million vehicle sales). Brands have chosen not to spend money on advertising them. This may be changing, though, since Audi, Porsche, and Ford (in some regional markets) all aired ads during the Super Bowl this year, too.
