The ‘Golden Girls’ Are Back—As Puppets In New Play This Fall

Many TV viewers will remember the classic TV show “The Golden Girls.” The show’s seven-season run (1985-1992) featured Beatrice Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty as four older single women (three widows and one divorcée) sharing a house in Miami.

Now comes word that the beloved show is returning…er, sort of. “That Golden Girls Show! A Puppet Parody” began a limited-run performance at New York City’s Union Square DR2 Theatre on Sept. 19 and officially opens on Oct. 3.

We bet you can guess which puppet is which character, so no need to name them!

A previous version of the play called “Thank You for Being a Friend” ran in Sydney, Australia, according to Today.com. While the earlier show brought the Golden Girls into the present day, this new play is going back to the ’80s, which creator Jonathan Rockefeller hopes will appeal to fans.

“We want to give them an experience of what ‘The Golden Girls’ is like, and all of your best memories of ‘The Golden Girls’ in a funny, humorous way,” Rockefeller said on Today. “This was a series where they could fight but it was always done with love. They could speak their minds, they could talk about things that were very taboo, but at the end of the day, they could all agree to disagree. And I think that is one of the things that makes the show so enduring to such a wide range of audiences.”
