Gordon Ramsey has helped many people pack on pounds over the years with his world-renowned cooking—but now he’s in the spotlight for losing some weight.

The 51-year-old “Hell’s Kitchen” host recently revealed that he lost more than 50 pounds in the early days of his fame. He said his reason for doing it was to save his marriage to wife Tana Ramsay, who is a fitness enthusiast. According to an interview with Britain’s Daily Mail , Tana was the source of his inspiration.

“Tana was not impressed with the way I was,” said the famously foul-mouthed celebrity chef, who said he weighed about 250 pounds at his heaviest. “I was overweight … I looked like a sack of s***. I look at the pictures and think, ‘How did Tana stay around?’ Because Tana has got better-looking and more gorgeous. And there she is, getting in bed with a fat f***.”

At the time of his weight gain, Ramsay was already a highly successful chef who’d just earned his third Michelin star. Additionally, he and Tana had been married for more than 20 years and already had four children together. He told the Daily Mail he began to worry about his health and stress levels.

Ramsay blamed his weight gain on eating unhealthy food and working long hours. “I don’t want my industry to kill me,” he said. “I know how unhealthy chefs are at the top level. Stress. Suicide. There’s a big downside to cooking loads for a living. It’s lethal: from obesity to heart attacks to cocaine habits.”

Despite still working as a chef and TV host, Ramsay stays quite fit these days. He changed up his diet, giving up milk and cheese and adding almond milk, berries and yogurt. He ran his first London Marathon in 2000 and has partnered with a trainer who has him riding a stationary bike for cardio as well as performing other weight-bearing exercises several times a week. He even completed an Ironman race in 2013 and has been training for another one.

But, he told the newspaper that when he feels he’s earned a reward, he likes eating Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate bars!
