There’s a remake of ‘The Great Outdoors’ movie in the works

IMDb

Good news for John Hughes fans! A remake of his classic 1988 film “The Great Outdoors” is happening and if the cast selection is any indication, this update will not disappoint.

The original starred the incomparable John Candy as Chet Ripley, a devoted family man from Chicago who takes his family to a lake house in Wisconsin for a fun-filled trip of outdoor activities. However, his best-laid plans go awry when his brother (played by Dan Akroyd) shows up and starts acting like a royal jerk.

Who Will Star In ‘The Great Outdoors’ Remake?

Details about the remake remain relatively slim, but Universal Pictures confirmed that funny man Kevin Hart will star in the project.

We don’t yet know whether he will play Candy’s role of the much put-upon family man or the jerky role of Akroyd.

Hart Tackles Other Classic Film Remakes

Coincidentally, Hart also plans to recreate more childhood magic by taking part in a re-do of 1995’s “Jumanji.” Of course, the original starred the much-missed Robin Williams.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” will be released shortly before Christmas this year. It will also star Nick Jonas, Dwayne Johnson and Jack Black. The remake already caused a ruckus because of star Karen Gillan’s incredibly skimpy clothes in recently released still photos. Gillan issued a quick social media response to assure audiences that there is a reason behind her odd choice of hiking clothes.

Should Classic Films Get Remade?

What do you think? Should the “The Great Outdoors” get an update? Or do you think the John Hughes’ original is sacrosanct?

For example, Ed Helms and Christina Applegate starred in a 2015 reboot of “National Lampoon’s Vacation.”

Sadly, that version didn’t have the original’s hilarious, timeless appeal. Here’s hoping the remake of “The Great Outdoors” captures the spirit and wit of the John Hughes’ classic.

Also, here’s hoping that Hollywood never tries to come for “The Breakfast Club.” You just can’t improve upon perfection!
