Here’s what Groot told Rocket at the end of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

Note: This story contains spoilers for “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Guardians of the Galaxy.”

If you haven’t caught “Avengers: Infinity War” yet, you may want to before diving into this article. In the final scene of the blockbuster movie, half of the Avengers seemingly die after the villain Thanos turns half of the universe’s population to ash using the Infinity Stones.

Among those killed is Groot, the cute and sometimes sassy sentient tree creature from the Guardians of the Galaxy. Before he fades away in Rocket Raccoon’s arms, Groot utters his final words, “I am Groot.” However, as fans know, that’s only what the audience hears. Groot is actually speaking a language that is indecipherable to most. While everything he says sounds like “I am Groot” to viewers, those words actually have a different meaning each time he speaks them.

A fan reached out to James Gunn, director of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, to inquire about the meaning of Groot’s final words from “Avengers: Infinity War,” and Gunn’s answer was pretty crushing:

Gunn said that the line appears in the script as “Dad.”

He’s also said that the version of Groot in “Avengers: Infinity War” is the child of the full-grown Groot that died in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. That clarification cleared up some confusion for fans, as some were not sure if the new Groot was a reincarnation of the original character.

Now that we know that the new Groot is actually the original’s offspring, it makes the “Dad” line even more sad. The line makes it apparent that teen Groot considers Rocket to be his father.

People were shook by this devastating information, and Gunn’s tweet was inundated with more than 2,000 replies and 26,000 retweets, with most fans expressing how emotionally affected they were by the revelation.

Gunn then came back the next day to say that he didn’t realize how impactful his answer would be and apologized for causing so much distress, but also emphasized how happy he is that the characters are so meaningful to fans:

Wow! Does this revelation make the ending of “Avengers: Infinity War” even more devastating to you?
