‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ director reveals a shocking fact about the beloved character, Groot

If you are a fan of Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” movies, you are probably a fan of Groot, the dim-witted but lovable tree-being whose only lines consist of three words: “I am Groot.”

Ah yes, the dim but lovable talking tree, Groot. He was a fan-favorite in his first onscreen appearance in 2014’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” but his popularity skyrocketed when—*SPOILER ALERT*—he sacrificed himself to save the group and was seemingly reborn as an adorable tiny baby twig.

As a result, Groot spent much of 2017’s “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2” stealing scenes by dancing and being adorable.

But fans of Groot are reeling after James Gunn, director of both movies, recently dropped a bombshell on Twitter. It started with a very cruel Twitter scenario, which resulted in Gunn issuing an equally cruel reminder of the fragility of life:

Now, as Mashable notes, this is not the first time in the last few years Gunn has hinted, or just plain said, that Groot is dead. But with Gunn’s tweet getting nearly 10,000 retweets, this might be the first time a large number of “Guardians of the Galaxy” fans became aware of this fact.

As a result, they freaked out across social media.

Here, in tweet form, is the collective internet going through the five stages of grief over the death of Groot.

And, Finally, Acceptance:

But despite all of the sad emojis this news generated, Gunn has stuck to his, um, guns. After all, by this point he is used to being roasted for his role in the demise of the original Groot.

But don’t worry, Groot fans. Old Groot may have gone to that big orchard in the sky, and Baby Groot is now all grown up, but it appears Teenage Groot will be coming back to the big screen in the new “Avengers” movie which is coming out this summer!
