This new Häagen-Dazs ice cream with ruby cacao chocolate is perfect for Valentine’s Day

Whether you’re a fan of dark, milk or white chocolate, one thing is certain: chocolate is amazing. But if you’re a fan of all three, choosing which one to pour on your popcorn or make a s’more with can be pretty tough.

Sorry to break it to you, but it’s about to get even tougher. There’s a brand-new chocolate on the block, and Häagen-Dazs is the first company to put it in ice cream in the U.S., bringing us ice cream pints and bars featuring the relatively new ruby cacao.

The new Häagen-Dazs has two new products with this pretty pink chocolate: Ruby cacao crackle trio crispy layers, a layered ice cream, and ruby cacao ice cream bars, which feature a ruby cacao coating. Häagen-Dazs says the ruby cacao bean “offers intense berry fruitiness (reminiscent of cassis [berry] and blueberries) and luscious smoothness with fresh, sour notes.”

The crackle trio crispy layers ice cream pint features crispy ruby chocolate layered within Häagen-Dazs’ pistachio and sweet cream ice cream flavors. The bars are sweet cream ice cream dipped in the rich ruby cacao, giving the bar fruity notes.

The pints cost around $5.49, while a box of three bars is $4.99. Both are in stores nationwide now, but only through September, so you’ll want to head to your local store now before they’re gone.

So, what exactly is ruby cacao? If you’ve never heard of it, you’re not alone. It didn’t arrive in the United States until last year.

Scientists at the Swiss chocolate-making company Barry Callebaut debuted ruby cacao in September 2017, making it the first new natural chocolate since the development of white chocolate in the 1930s. Calling it the fourth chocolate, Barry Callebaut says ruby cacao, which is derived from the ruby cocoa bean found mostly in South America, is a “sensorial delight.”

Most surprising, however, is that a unique process naturally brings out the flavor and color tone present in the ruby cacao bean, without adding any fruit flavors or coloring. Yes, the rosy-pink hue and berry fruitiness are 100% natural!

Though there are not a ton of ruby cacao products on the U.S. market just yet, there are a few you can order online.

This ruby cacao chocolate bar from Chocolove, for example, can be found on Amazon for $7.51 for a 3.1-ounce bar.

Harry & David has 12 ruby cacao truffles for $29.99, plus shipping. You can also get the truffles shaped like hearts and roses for $39.99 if you’re looking for a Valentine’s Day gift, which might be perfect since they’re pink!

Will you be trying some ruby cacao products or sticking to milk, dark and white chocolate?
