Here’s Why Alicia Keys Finally Wore Makeup Again

Alicia Keys has been inspiring all of us ever since her official breakup with makeup last year.

Last May, the 15-time Grammy-award-winning singer decided she didn’t want to try to hide her natural looks anymore—and she’s stuck with it, despite some harsh criticism on social media. Since she announced her intentions in Lenny Letter, her bare face has appeared everywhere from the HD cameras of “The Voice” to the white carpet at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards. It helps that her skin is flawless, of course, but that’s beside the point of her inclusive #nomakeup movement.

Brace yourselves, though: This month’s issue of Allure features the multi-talented songstress with (gasp!) makeup on. And it isn’t subtle, either.

The cover is all about Keys’ gorgeous, makeup-free face, but the photo spread inside features bold turquoise graphic eyes, a dramatic take on bottom liner and attention-grabbing slashes of bright purple across her orbital bone. The colorful display is all the handiwork of her personal makeup artist, Dotti Streeters.

To be fair, this is the first time she’s worn makeup in an editorial photo shoot since late last spring. And she’s completely ready to explain herself.

“I’m not a slave to makeup,” she says in the interview. “I’m not a slave to not wearing makeup either. I get to choose at [any] given moment. That’s my right.”

At first, some people criticized her #nomakeup choice as a radical or political act. Keys says it was just a personal decision, though, and insists she’s not even anti-makeup.

“I think makeup can be self-expression,” she says. “I have no intention to shame anyone at all [who chooses to wear it]. No one should be ashamed by the way you choose to express yourself. And that’s exactly the point. However, if you want to do that for yourself, you should do that.”
