Here’s How To Make Your Own Microwave Popcorn

When you’re in the mood for popcorn, throwing a bag in the microwave is an easy and convenient way to enjoy the snack.

But many pre-bagged popcorns are full of unnecessary chemicals, and they are often filled with high amounts of butter and salt. Popcorn on its own is a healthy, high-fiber food, so there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be able to enjoy it, which is why your best bet is to make your own at home.

Luckily, you don’t have to invest in a popcorn maker or spend time cooking it over the stove because you can make your own, healthier version of microwave popcorn at home. All you need are popcorn kernels, vegetable oil, a little bit of salt, and a brown paper bag, and you can have healthy and tasty popcorn ready in just 3 minutes.

Not only is this at-home version of microwave popcorn better for you, but you’ll likely save money by making your own at home instead of having to buy pre-portioned packets.

Here’s how to do it:

Materials

  • 1/2 cup uncooked popcorn
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • Brown paper bag

Instructions

1. In a cup or small bowl, mix together the unpopped popcorn and the oil.

2. Pour the coated corn into a brown paper lunch sack, and sprinkle in the salt. Fold the top of the bag over twice to seal in the ingredients.

3. Cook in the microwave at full power for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes, or until you hear pauses of about 2 seconds between pops. Carefully open the bag to avoid burning yourself on the steam, and pour into a serving bowl.

This recipe yields basic popcorn, but you can always add your own toppings such as Parmesan cheese, different herbs, hot spices and more. Next time you want to have movie night, ditch the microwave popcorn and make your own at home!
