VHS tapes have been outdated for quite some time now, but you likely still have a few sitting around, especially if you recorded home videos. You don’t want to get rid of the precious memories you caught on tape, but let’s be honest, when are you going to sit down to watch a VHS tape? Probably not anytime soon.

Thankfully, there’s an easy way to transfer your tapes onto your laptop using a video capture adapter. From there, you can transfer it straight onto an external hard drive so that you don’t take up too much storage space on your computer.

According to this CNET demonstration, the process of getting your old video into a digital format is simple. All you’ll need is a computer, a VCR and an adapter so that you can upload the video that’s playing in your VCR straight onto your computer or laptop.

An adapter can run you anywhere from around $10 to $80. This process can be done on a PC or a Mac, so be sure to choose an adapter that will work with your type of laptop and operating system.

Once you’ve got those parts, the process is as simple as pressing play. Once the video has played from start to finish, you’ll have the complete version on your laptop, as well. Then, you’ll finally be able to let go of a tiny piece of the past, but still have all of those moments you captured on VHS.

Let’s see how this is done:
