Hoda Kotb got emotional when talking about coronavirus in New Orleans with Drew Brees
The coronavirus pandemic is creating hard times for all, and sometimes our emotions about it just come pouring out. That’s what happened to “Today” anchor Hoda Kotb while she was on air last week.
On March 27, Kotb interviewed New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees about how the Big Easy has been impacted by the coronavirus crisis. The athlete has pledged to donate $5 million to the State of Louisiana to cover costs for 10,000 meals per day for children on meal programs, seniors and others in need for as long as necessary during this difficult time.
Kotb is a former resident of New Orleans, having worked as an anchor and reporter from a CBS affiliate there from 1992 to 1998, so the city holds a special place in her heart.
New Orleans has been hit particularly hard by the coronavirus pandemic. The city earned the unwelcome distinction of becoming the national leader in COVID-19 deaths per capita the day before Kotb’s interview with Brees.
After hearing about the devastation that New Orleans is experiencing due to the virus and signing off with Brees, she became emotional and fought back tears. Her co-anchor, Savannah Guthrie, was empathetic and encouraged Kotb to “take a moment.”
“I know where your heart is,” Guthrie said.

Guthrie even stepped in to read Kotb’s next line while she gathered her composure. How sweet!
People were heartened by Kotb’s genuine display of emotion and tweeted their support for the anchor.

Brees also took to Instagram to announce his decision to donate $5 million to help the people of New Orleans. “Let’s all do our part, maintain hope and get through this together,” he wrote:

During his appearance on “Today,” he echoed this sentiment of hope. “Today” posted his interview with Kotb in the YouTube clip below:
“Hang in there and maintain hope,” he said. “Obviously we have been through tough times together, whether it’s hurricanes, oil spills, floods, and this is just another one of those bits of adversity that we are going to come out better on the other side. But we have to stick together right now and obviously it may get a little bit worse before it gets better but at the end of the day we are going to be better because of it.”
