Hostess is Celebrating its 100th Birthday with Limited-Edition CupCakes

While it’s safe to say you’ve probably had a Hostess-brand treat at some point in your life, I am willing to bet you don’t know just how old those round, chocolate cupcakes with creme filling and a swirl of icing actually are.

The world was first introduced to what we now know as the Hostess CupCake in 1919, making this year the brand’s 100th birthday. Obviously, 100 years is quite the milestone worth celebrating, and (lucky for us!) Hostess is doing it how they know best — with birthday cupcakes, of course!

Hostess Birthday CupCakes trade the chocolate for golden cake with rainbow sprinkles baked inside and vanilla icing in the center. You’ll also find icing and rainbow sprinkles on top, plus Hostess’ signature squiggle.

“For Hostess, turning 100 is about all the people who have included us in their special occasions and everyday moments of indulgence,” Keith Peterfeso, Hostess brands’ brand director for all day snacking said in a press release. “With this latest product innovation, we are sharing our birthday cake with Hostess fans across the country — spanning demographics, tastes and generations — inviting everyone to take part of this once-in-a-century celebration.”

The CupCakes are available nationwide now for a limited time in multi-pack and single-serve, along with mint chocolate and strawberry flavors, which will also only be around for a limited time. The company is also breaking out mint chocolate- and strawberry-flavored CupCakes, which are only available in multi-packs.

While the Hostess CupCake has been around since 1919, the brand’s other products, like Twinkies, Ho Hos and Ding-Dongs, haven’t been gracing our taste buds for quite as long. Twinkies were first released in 1930, quickly becoming Hostess’ best-selling cake — not just because they’re amazing, but also because you could get two for just five cents. Today, around half a billion Twinkies are made each year.
