George Clooney is one of the most attractive men in the world. People magazine has acknowledged that fact over and over again. Even science confirms it! So, it comes as no surprise that the incredibly eligible bachelor didn’t even have to leave his house to meet his wife, Amal Alamuddin Clooney.
On a clip from a yet-to-be-aired episode of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman, Clooney shared how he and Amal, an international human rights lawyer, met for the first time.
Spoiler: there are no bars, dating apps or red carpets for this meet-cute!
Love on the Lake
The couple’s romance all started back in July of 2013. George was enjoying some R&R in his Lake Como abode. At the same time, Amal just happened to be in the area en route to Cannes with a mutual friend.
George shared with Letterman that the friend asked to stop by with Amal. Clooney didn’t hesitate and responded, “Of course!” Little did he know his hospitality would pay off.
Still, the friend’s plus-one remained a mystery to Clooney. Thankfully, his agent stepped in and offered some sage advice. “I met this woman who is coming to your house, who you’re going to marry,” his agent told the actor.
Even with that set-up, sparks didn’t fly instantly. Instead, the pair took their time and got to know each other. “The funniest thing was my mom and dad were visiting so my parents were there,” George shared. “And we just talked, we stayed up all night talking.”
After meeting at Clooney’s Italian home, the pair became pen pals. “And I got her email address, because she was going to send me some pictures of my parents,” the actor shared. “So we started writing. I didn’t know if she wanted to go out with me — I just thought we were buddies.”
Eventually, that would change. The duo kept in touch via email and grew closer in the coming months. “And over a period of time it became clear we were more than just friends,” Clooney told The Hollywood Reporter.
And the rest, as they say, is history. George and Amal Clooney wed in star-studded style in 2014 and now are parents to seven-month-old twins. Even Hollywood would be hard-pressed to write a better love story!
