How to get the new Gmail right now

Google’s Gmail has just gotten a makeover, and it comes with a lot of new features. And while Google is still rolling out the changes, there’s a chance you may be able to access the new version now. Interested in taking a look?

Enabling New Gmail

First you need to see if the new Gmail is available for your account, which you can do by going to the gear icon in the top right corner of your Gmail page. There, you’ll see the option to “Try the new Gmail” — if it’s available.

If you have a G Suite account for work or school, meanwhile, administrators can enable the update via the Admin Console. Then users will have access to the “Try the new Gmail” option on their individual accounts.

Right away, you’ll see that your Gmail interface looks a bit different with the new version — though not too different.

“That was intentional,” Jacob Bank, Gmail product manager, told Forbes. “We didn’t want people to freak out when they opened the new Gmail for the first time. We wanted there to be a discovery process for the new features.”

So besides a bit of a glow up, what else is new with Gmail? New updates focus on safety, security, organization, productivity and more. Here are just a few of the new features you’ll notice when you update your account.

1. Confidential Mode

The new Gmail will allow you to set an expiration date for your emails so that the recipient can only access your message during a time period specified by you. It also allows you to prevent recipients from forwarding or copying the contents of your message.

This is a good option for sending information you want to keep secure. You’ll also be able to enable a two-factor authentication code for specific messages, for those times you want to be sure that only your intended recipient can open it.

2. Nudging

You know how you read an email, mentally make a note to respond to it later, but then somehow totally forget about it? Google has come up with a way for your email account to automatically remind you about emails you’ve saved for later. When you haven’t replied to an email the service has identified as one you’d likely respond to, the message reappears at the top of your inbox with a message asking you if you want to follow up.

3. Snoozing

With Hover Tools, you can sort your emails. When you hover a mouse over an email, you’re given the option to archive, delete, mark as unread or “snooze” it until later that day, tomorrow, next week or a specific date and time of your choosing. It will then resend you the email at your chosen time so you can deal with it when it’s more convenient for you.

4. Native Offline Mode

For those times when you don’t have a reliable internet connection but still need to get some work done, you can access your email with native offline support, allowing you to search, compose, reply, delete and archive emails from the past 90 days, all without being connected to the internet. This new feature eliminates the need for a Chrome extension or other additional tool to access email while offline.

5. Attachment Chips

If you need to quickly find a document within your email, Attachment Chips will show you the name and type of each file attached to a message thread. When you click on the chip, it will open the file in preview mode, and you will have the option to open, save and print the document. You must use the default view in Gmail in order to see the chips.

So how about it? Are you eager to try the new Gmail? Or will you continue using the present version until it’s no longer available?
