Kate Middleton and Prince William have finally revealed the name of their newest arrival! We can all now refer to the royal baby as His Royal Highness Prince Louis Arthur Charles of Cambridge.

While it might seem like a pretty straightforward and easy-to-pronounce name, there’s already been some confusion. Pretty much right after Kensington Palace announced his name, the internet was already asking questions.

Is It Like Lewis or Louie?

Spelled like “Louis,” it’s hard to know from an Instagram post if that’s it’s pronounced like “Lewis,” or if the correct way to pronounce it is “Louie,” like the well-known line of French kings.

Luckily, it wasn’t long before we got an answer. The new royal’s name is pronounced the French way: Loo-ee! Hear it below:

He is fifth in line to the British throne, after grandfather Prince Charles, father Prince William and his two older siblings, Prince George and Princess Charlotte.

The Name Came As A Surprise, But Has Royal Family Roots

Before the name was announced, bookmakers’ favorites for the baby were Arthur, Albert and James. The name Louis, though perhaps unexpected, does, however, have a connection to the British royal family. It is likely that Prince Louise was named after Prince Philip’s grandfather, as well as William’s great-great uncle.

“Louis” is also part of Prince William and Prince George’s full names; Prince William is William Arthur Philip Louis and Prince George is George Alexander Louis.

The name Louis has French and German origins, according to Nameberry, and means “renowned warrior.”

The newest arrival was born April 23, weighing 8 pounds, 7 ounces.

Prince Louis’ arrival comes less than a month before the highly anticipated royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Kensington Palace announced three days after Louis’ birth that Prince William will officially be Prince Harry’s best man at his May 19 wedding.

While there’s been much speculation about who will design Markle’s wedding dress, the palace has been tight-lipped on that and other wedding details, such as whether Markle will have a bridal party herself.
