I don’t mind ants. They’re a natural and crucial piece to the circle of life. But when they get into my home, they better watch out. I don’t have nightmares of ants crawling on me like spiders, but an ant invasion can be destructive.

Here’s a method from DIY Natural to try to get rid of two types of ants: odorous house ants and carpenter ants. Not sure what type of ants you have? Check out this ant guide.

House Ant Bait

House ants carry food back to their nests, you will need to make a concoction that they will want to bring home with them. These ants like sugar, so this bait contains that.

Mix three tablespoons borax, 1/2 cup powdered sugar and one cup warm water together. Soak a cotton ball in the mixture and place near (or directly in the path of) the ant trail.

Carpenter Ant Bait

Carpenter ants don’t bring food home with them, so you will need to eradicate them as they try to enter your home. Natural DIY recommends to use food grade Diatomaceous Earth (DE).

It’s a natural and organic substance made from the fossilized remains of organisms. I won’t go into the details of how it works, but is safe to use around kids and pets but is lethal to ants.

For this to work, DE must be planted directly into the ant nest, so you’ll need to find it. DIY Natural recommends to use this gadget to spray into your home’s cracks and holes the ants use for travel as well as the nest.
