3 brands of hummus sold at Walmart and Target recalled for listeria contamination

Three different brands of House of Thaller hummus were just recalled due to a potential health risk, according to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.

Be on the lookout for Fresh Foods Market Artisan Hummus with Pine Nuts, Lantana White Bean Hummus with Pine Nut & Herb Topping and Marketside Classic Hummus with Pine Nuts distributed through popular retailers such as Wal-Mart and Target, as well as smaller chains such as Harris Teeter, as these are the brands with a potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

FDA

Listeria monocytogenes can be fatal in young children, frail or elderly people or those with weakened immune systems. Pregnant women are also more susceptible to listeria, and the bacteria can be harmful to fetuses. However, healthy individuals will likely only suffer short-term effects such as high fever and nausea.

The hummus containers come in clear 10-ounce packages with clear or colored plastic lids and were distributed from April 18, 2017 to June 13, 2017 in the U.S., and on April 20, 2017 in Canada.

So, if you purchased one of the three hummus brands between these dates, you need to be sure not to eat it and to throw the entire package away.

FDA

For more information about whether your hummus is safe to eat, you can check the FDA website for the exact expiration dates and lot codes of the affected containers.

If your package is printed with any of those codes, go ahead and dispose of the hummus. The pine nuts are what’s making these dips  unsafe to consume.

FDA

According to the FDA, “We were notified by HVF, Inc., an ingredient supplier, of a recall involving Roasted Pine Nuts. HVF, Inc. supplied the Roasted Pine Nuts used to create the Topping/Garnish for selected varieties of Hummus with Pine Nut Topping. Routine sampling of a different item produced by the supplier for a different company revealed positive Listeria Monocytogenes findings. HVF, Inc. is recalling all products made in their facility during the time of the potential contamination.”

Customers who purchased any of these products are advised to contact the House of Thaller Customer Service Center. They’re open Monday throught Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. CST and can be reached at 855-215-5142.
