Disney World Closes Its Doors For The Fourth Time In 45 Years

It’s not everyday that the “happiest place on Earth” takes a day off. When you’re in the business of making dreams come true, there is no such thing as downtime.

But today, Friday, Oct. 7, Disney World is closing its doors to keep visitors safe from the weather Hurricane Matthew is bringing to the area. The category 3 hurricane is hitting the Florida coast as we speak. It’s bringing winds of 107 mph and torrential rains and flooding, according to The Weather Channel.

The theme park has only closed its doors four times in the past 45 years, as Hello Giggles reports. But this seems like the right move. It’s a necessary precaution to keep Mickey and everyone else safe.

The only other times the park has completely shut down have also been due to hurricane-related issues, aside from a quick evacuation and eventual closure on 9/11, according to CNBC.

The theme park issued a statement saying that all of the parks including Walt Disney World theme parks, water parks, Disney Springs, miniature golf courses and ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex would be closed through the end of the day Friday. Only time will tell if they can follow through with their plans to reopen on Oct. 8.

If you are a current guest at the resort, Disney had a list of recommendations of what to do to stay safe. If your travel plans have been affected due to the storm, they plan on waiving any cancellation fees. If you checked out early to get out of Florida before the storm hit, you can also be refunded for the days you missed at the theme park.

Disney World really seems to have this whole thing under control. They may not close their doors often, but when they do, they’re still in the business of keeping their customers happy.
