Ice bumper cars are a growing trend, and they look like so much fun

You’ve twirled around an ice rink on skates before. You’ve zipped down a snowy hill on a sled. The next adventure to add to your winter bucket list? Ice bumper cars. Trust us — this is snow much fun! 

Over the past couple of years, this winterized spin on bumper cars has been picking up in popularity. Ice rinks are now being taken over by the bumper cars, which are akin to giant inner tubes on studded wheels that glide on the ice. Some cities have certain times for the bumper cars, while others have dedicated rinks.

We’ve spotted this fun activity across the country, from Rhode Island to Colorado.

Rules vary by location, but the activity is actually fairly tame, and kids can often drive the cars solo as long as a parent or guardian signs a waiver. The bumper cars, after all, move at just a few miles per hour.

The ice bumper cars are also popping up in ski towns, which are offering more outdoor activities to appeal to non-skiers — or even skiers who want some additional fun off the slopes.

For instance, winter sports enthusiasts in Snowmass, Colorado, can ice skate and also participate in “Game of Stones,” a free curling series. And the ice bumper cars are making their debut as a pop-up this holiday season from Dec. 18 to Jan. 2. 

The Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center, which is near Denver International Airport in Aurora, Colorado, has been transformed into a winter wonderland, with all types of holiday activities. In addition to ice skating and tubing, the resort has set up ice bumper cars for guests to enjoy. Plus, the resort has a holiday-themed show, plus “Ice!” an exhibit that tells the story of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer through a series of colored ice sculptures that have been carved from 2 million pounds of ice.
