Most people know Idris Elba for his illustrious acting career. You may recognize the Golden Globe-winning actor from his roles in the “Thor” and “Avengers” films, “Molly’s Game” or as detective John Luther in the BBC series “Luther.” In 2018, he was named People’s “Sexiest Man Alive.”
As it turns out, being handsome and a great actor are not Elba’s only claims to fame. He is also a professional DJ and he is set to perform as DJ Big Driis at Coachella Valley Arts and Music Festival in California this April.
Although some are surprised to learn of Elba’s “hidden” talent, his diehard fans are well-acquainted with his skills on the turntables. He often posts about his DJ gigs on Instagram.
Here he is in action in a video from last April:
And here he is spinning some tunes at the after-party for the premiere of his directorial debut “Yardie”:
In an interview with Dancing Astronaut in August 2017, Elba revealed that he planned to focus more on his DJ career.
“It’s ironic that I’ve definitely reached a pinnacle in my acting space, which is amazing, but it means that I can’t really take time out to concentrate on music,” he explained. “But next year, the whole of the spring through April, is dedicated to touring and putting out this Hiatus album alongside a string of tours.”
Indeed, Coachella is not his first high-profile gig as a DJ. He has also performed at the Glastonbury Festival in England, the Essence Fest in New Orleans and even at Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle’s wedding reception last year. He also opened for Madonna on the Germany leg of her “Rebel Heart” tour in 2015.
Next up, he’ll combine his talents by playing a DJ in a new Netflix series, “Turn Up Charlie,” set to debut March 15.
