A look inside Tom Selleck and Jillie Mack’s 30-year marriage

When you think of celebrity marriages, “long-lasting” is probably not a descriptor that comes to mind. However, one Hollywood couple is bucking the trend of relationships that come and go faster than movie roles.

Actor Tom Selleck and dancer Jillie Mack recently celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary.

So, what is their secret to success? For one thing, putting family first.

“I quit ‘Magnum’ to have a family,” Selleck told People back in 2012 of his decision to quit the hit TV show ‘Magnum P.I.’  when his daughter, Hannah, was born in 1988. “It took a long time to get off the train, but I try very hard to have balance, and this ranch has helped me do that,” he explained, referencing his home on 65 acres of land in Ventura County, California.

Selleck also credits the couple’s parenting style with keeping their relationship strong over the years.

“Jillie and I have a pretty good partnership,” Selleck told New York Daily News in 1999. “We don’t do anything or make any decisions without consulting each other. And if one of us makes a decision involving Hannah, the other parent completely supports that position, even if you disagree.”

Selleck and Mack first met in London when Selleck became a frequent attendee of the West End production of “Cats,” which Mack starred in.

While they’ve both made their living as entertainers, they’ve made an effort to keep their private life private throughout their relationship, starting with their secret wedding in 1987. The couple tied the knot in a surprise ceremony under aliases at a 24-hour wedding chapel in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Selleck allowed only Polaroid photos to be taken at the nuptials so that negatives would not be leaked to the press.

As for their daughter, Hannah, now 28, she’s an avid horse rider and, from her Instagram account, seems to look at a LOT like her mom, Jillie.

Despite Tinsel Town’s bad reputation for short-lived romantic relationships, Selleck and Mack are not the only couple in the limelight who have made it work for the long haul. Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have been married for an impressive 28 years. Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn have 33 years together under their belts, and they credit never marrying with keeping their love alive.
