Investigation Finds Some Hotels Don’t Wash Sheets In Between Guests

It’s hard to be away from the comforts of home. But being able to check into a nice hotel makes the time apart from your own bed much, much easier. Seeing a plush duvet cover and crisp, clean sheets is the best feeling as you roll your suitcase into a hotel room.

But those sheets may not be as clean as you think (or at least, hope) they are. According to findings from the “Inside Edition” team in September 2016, some hotels don’t clean the sheets in between guests.

Eww. That’s just plain yucky.

In fact, three of the nine hotels they stayed at didn’t clean the sheets. How could they tell, you ask? Invisible paint.

This video follows a team from “Inside Edition” checking into a hotel room and spraying the sheets with invisible paint that can only be seen in UV light. When a different member of the team checked into the same room the next day under a different name, they found the message they’d left the day before still on the sheets.

Supposedly, this isn’t common practice.

“We make it a custom to change every checked out room sheet,” the manager of the hotel told Inside Edition. “However, I do not know what happened in this situation.”

According to Huffington Post, it’s a fairly normal for a hotel to wash sheets every other day during a guests’ stay, which seems reasonable. But it’s also common to leave the same duvet cover on a bed without cleaning it for months at a time.

So, you may want to start giving your sheets a good look before crawling into bed at night. Other than that, all you can really do is hope for the best. Or, you know, stay home.
