Jane Fonda’s Instagram post will remind you of her iconic ’80s workout videos

Long before Jane Fonda was one of Netflix’s standout stars (“Grace and Frankie” is, hands down, one of the streaming service’s best TV shows), she was one of the celebrity workout stars of the 1980s. And she’s donned her leotard again to help us all keep fit during our enforced confinement.

Fonda shared a video to her social media channels, including Instagram, and while it starts like a regular workout routine (it even has an ’80s throwback clip, complete with big hair and sweatbands), with the star announcing, “My name is Jane Fonda and I’m going to bring back the Jane Fonda workout during this home sequestration, so come on and do it with me,” it soon becomes clear that she has an ulterior motive.

Sure, Fonda might want us all to keep fit during lockdown, but she also wants us to think about the planet. So she interrupts her leg lifts to say, “There are too many workouts happening right now on television and on computers. What I really would like you to do is to work out with me for the planet. There’s a climate crisis that’s a real emergency.”

She then invites the world to join her for a virtual #FireDrillFriday, ending her message with, “The future needs you… I need you.”

The caption to the video has more details: the next #FireDrillFriday takes place on Friday, April 10 at 11 a.m. PT/2 p.m. ET “to keep the pressure on politicians to adopt a #GreenNewDeal, end new fossil fuels, and enact a just transition to a renewable economy that protects workers and communities.”

“Let’s tackle the climate crisis while we #StayHome,” Fonda wrote.

Before the COVID-19 lockdown, Fonda regularly took part in Fire Drill Fridays — weekly protests to raise awareness about climate change.
