138 JCPenney Stores Are Closing Their Doors

And in case you haven’t heard, 138 JCPenney stores are closing their doors in 2017. This is sad news for fans of the store and for the employees who will be losing their jobs. JCPenney attributes the decision to close 138 stores to competition from other major online retailers such as Amazon. Stores that continue to perform well will stay open.

“During the year, it became evident the stores that could fully execute the company’s growth initiatives of beauty, home refresh and special sizes generated significantly higher sales, and a more vibrant in-store shopping environment,” Marvin Ellison, chairman and chief executive officer of JCPenney, said in a press release.

“We believe the relevance of our brick-and-mortar portfolio will be driven by the implementation of these initiatives consistently to a larger percent of our stores. Therefore, our decision to close stores will allow us to raise the overall brand standard of the company and allocate capital more efficiently.”

According to USA Today, the stores will officially close on July 31. But until then, keep an eye out for liquidation sales at the affected stores.
