Here’s the scoop on Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner’s surprise Vegas wedding
One of Hollywood’s coolest couples, actress Sophie Turner and pop star Joe Jonas, have said “I do” — a little earlier than expected.
The celebrity lovebirds shunned the Billboard Music Award after parties on May 1 and popped off to get hitched instead. Here’s everything you need to know about their surprise nuptials, plus some background info on how this particular actress/musician pairing came to be.
A Different Kind Of After-Party
The 2019 Billboard Music Awards ceremony at the Las Vegas MGM Grand Garden Arena saw Drake, Ariana Grande, Cardi B and Mariah Carey win awards. Joe Jonas, 29, performed with his brothers Nick and Kevin at the awards, but he had something even bigger to celebrate that night. Straight after the star-studded event, he and his fiancée Sophie Turner, 23, hot-footed it to another ceremony: their wedding.
Keeping It Quiet
The couple managed to keep their nuptials top secret. In fact, they didn’t even arrive at the Billboards together. Jonas walked the red carpet with his brothers, while Turner was photographed with actor Tye Sheridan, with whom she co-stars in the upcoming “X-Men: Dark Phoenix.” They later presented the Top New Artist award to Juice WRLD.
World-Famous Wedding Venue
Performing and presenting duties over, the couple headed to the world-famous Little White Wedding Chapel with guests that included Khalid, Diplo and Joe’s bros Nick and Kevin. It was thanks to Diplo that the news went public — he live-streamed the whole thing on Instagram. Of course, no Little White Wedding Chapel experience is complete without an Elvis Presley impersonator, who performed the ceremony.
Elvis Speaks
The newlyweds haven’t made any details of their wedding public, but the Elvis impersonator (whose real name is Jesse Garon) was happy to spill the beans. He told Entertainment Tonight that the couple had hired out the wedding chapel a week in advance and that they left the venue in a pink stretch limousine. He also confirmed that they were still planning another ceremony overseas. Jonas himself said in an interview on the Zach Sang Show in April that they were “getting married in France.”
Part One, Done
According to PEOPLE, that’s a big part of why Jonas and Turner had their Vegas ceremony.
“They had to get married in the States to make it legal, but the wedding is still in Europe,” said a source.
According to the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in France, “At least one of the parties to be married must have resided in France for at least forty days immediately preceding the marriage. This precludes a wedding in cases where both parties are only visiting for a short stay.” Additionally, “In France, a religious ceremony does not constitute a legal marriage.”
Alternative Bridal Wear
Photos and videos of the Vegas ceremony shared on Instagram by Diplo reveal that Turner didn’t go for a traditional wedding dress. Instead, she wore a white jumpsuit by Ukrainian designer Svitlana Bevza, which costs $650 and is available to pre-order, paired with Loeffler Randall gold mules costing $395. She also donned a bouffant veil and carried a blinking bouquet. Jonas, on the other hand, opted for a more conservative grey suit.
Insta-Wedding
Diplo’s Instagram showed Turner walking down a short aisle at the chapel in front of a group of friends, with Nick and Kevin Jonas taking on the role of groomsmen as country stars Dan + Shay performed their hit “Speechless.” Diplo’s live Instagram story captured the couple reciting their vows in front of “Elvis.” (The DJ and record producer was clearly in a playful mood, as he put a funny dog face on Elvis.)
In The Tunnel Of Love
Thanks to unofficial wedding videographer Diplo, we also know that the newlyweds put on festive “Elvis” glasses and posed on a pink Cadillac in the chapel’s famous “Tunnel of Love” drive-thru, just like many other couples have done over the years. (Instagram user Pepe Calixto has a photo showing the car in all its glory.) According to online records, the couple applied for a marriage license earlier that day in Clark County, Nevada.

In Good Company
Other famous couples who said “I do” at the Little White Wedding Chapel include Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, Frank Sinatra and Mia Farrow, and Britney Spears and Jason Allen Alexander. Turner and Jonas didn’t hang around in Vegas; according to PEOPLE, they took a jet back to L.A. the next morning, where they spent a “honeymoon night” at the West Hollywood private members club, San Vicente Bungalows. Turner was pictured wearing a white “Just Married” sash over a white hoodie.
The Beginning
Turner and Jonas kept their relationship under wraps for a long time, but are believed to have started dating around October 2016, when they were first spotted together in a friend’s Halloween Instagram post — dressed as a Dalmatian and a rabbit. Two years later and the couple’s Halloween efforts (looking good as Morticia and Gomez Adams) were shared with the world via Jonas’ Instagram page.

Cozy At A Concert
In November 2016, Turner and Jonas were spotted together at a Kings of Leon concert in the Netherlands. A source told Us Magazine that they were cuddled up and kissing throughout the show, and a Sophie Turner fan account shared screenshots of photos other people had taken of the couple during the gig. Over the next few weeks, they were seen out and about in New York City and Los Angeles, enjoying dinner dates and leaving clubs. However, the couple themselves were still tight-lipped about their romance.
First Picture On Social Media
Fans went crazy in January 2017 when Turner seemed to confirm the rumors of her relationship with Jonas, sharing a photo of him on Instagram with the brief caption, “Miami Daze.”
“Yessss I’m here for this!” one follower posted, while another commented, “Best couple in the world.” But despite fans begging for a “Jophie” selfie, they had to wait a little longer for that.

Met Gala Date
In May 2017, Turner and Jonas both attended the Met Gala, but they walked the red carpet separately. Photographers managed to snap them holding hands as they headed to Katy Perry’s after party, and Nick Jonas shared a picture of the couple together with the caption, “These two,” and a red heart emoji. By now, it was pretty clear that Turner and Jonas were in a relationship. Turner recently told Harper’s Bazaar that they met through mutual friends.
“They’d been trying to introduce us for a long time,” she said. “We were following each other on Instagram and he direct-messaged me one fine day, out of the blue.”

Turner Opens Up
During an interview with Marie Claire published in July 2017, Turner gave insight into her relationship.
“You do feel like you’re living in a fishbowl,” she said. “It’s frustrating [that] it’s the most mundane things that make the news — how boring! There are really no other headlines?”
She also told the magazine that they had met each other’s parents — she joined a Jonas family skiing trip and he got to know the Turners in a north London pub.
A Private Relationship
The same month, Turner spoke to The Times about Jonas, saying, “I’m in a relationship, but it’s a very private relationship.”
She also revealed how much her life had changed, saying, “I’m happier than I’ve been in a very long time. I very much isolated myself for a while and forgot what was fun. Going out with friends, going out to eat, not really having a care. And people I’ve met recently in my life have drawn me out of that. It really helps you own those insecurities. The things I tortured myself about before, I can forget about.”
Puppy Love
The couple took their relationship up a notch in September 2017, adopting a cute Alaskan Klee Kai pup called Porky. In an interview with TODAY’s “My Pet Tale” in December 2018, Jonas explained how Porky’s name came about.
“We got Porky and it was kind of a mistake because the name came from her wanting a Pomsky,” he said. “And I misheard what she said, so I thought she was saying that’s the name of the dog she wanted.”
Jonas also revealed that the couple takes their dogs (they have another Alaskan Klee Kai called Waldo) all over the world with them.

She Said Yes
In October 2017, Turner and Jonas got engaged. Jonas confirmed the news on Instagram with a picture of his fiancée wearing her pear-shaped, double-banded ring, captioned, “She said yes.” Turner shared the same picture on her feed, writing, “I said yes.” Nick and Kevin Jonas were quick to congratulate their brother and future sister-in-law.
“I love you both so much,” Nick wrote, while Kevin said he was “so happy” to welcome Turner into the family.

A Happy BFF
Turner is best known for playing Sansa Stark in the hit TV series “Games of Thrones,” which is also where she met her best friend Maisie Williams (aka Sansa’s sister, Arya Stark). Williams also congratulated the engaged couples, writing on Instagram, “Congratulations to my beautiful girlfriend on her engagement. This is just one of MANY life milestones we’ll share. Love you both.#mophie #jophie #holymoly.”
Maid Of Honor
Turner hasn’t given away many details about her upcoming (second) wedding, but she did confirm what everyone suspected: Williams will play a major role. When asked about what Williams would be wearing on her big day, Turner joked to ET in April, “I don’t know why she’s thinking about [what she’s wearing to my wedding]. I’m giving her the bridesmaid dress! She’s my maid of honor! One of two.”
Looking Forward To Part Two
Now that the Vegas leg of the Turner/Jonas wedding is over, we’re looking forward to part two. In the meantime, it’s back to business for the newlyweds, who made their first public appearance as a married couple on the red carpet at the 2019 Met Gala on May 6. Jonas embarks on the Jonas Brothers “Happiness Begins” tour — their first in nearly a decade — in August, while Turner will be doing the promotional rounds for “X-Men: Dark Phoenix.”
